Becoming a Continuing Education Provider

Continuing Education

Every athletic trainer licensed pursuant to Chapter 468, Part XIII, F.S. shall be required to complete 24 hours of continuing education in courses approved by the department in the 24 months preceding each biennial renewal period, which shall include certification in the professional rescuer level cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association American Safety and Health Institute, Emergency Care and Safety Institute, and the National Safety Council. Also, 2 hours of the 24 must be a course on the prevention of medical errors and a 1 or 2 hour course related to HIV/Aids..

However, athletic trainers who receive an initial license during the second half of the biennium shall only be required to complete 12 hours prior to renewal, which shall include certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and a 2 hour course on the prevention of medical errors. Athletic trainers who receive an initial license during the 90 days preceding a renewal period shall not be required to complete any continuing education for that renewal period.
The following continuing education is approved by the department: Courses, professional development activities and publication activities approved by the National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) in NATABOC Category A or B: Courses approved by the Athletic Trainer's Association of Florida in NATABOC Category A or B: Post-certification courses sponsored by a college or university approved by the United States Department of Education which provides a curriculum for athletic trainers in NATABOC Category C and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification courses in NATABOC Category D. Home study courses approved by the NATABOC will be acceptable for ten of the required continuing education hours. The remaining 14 hours require actual attendance and participation. The 24 continuing education hours shall include no more than 4 hours of  NATABOC Category D.
