Below is a summary of Florida CE requirements for ND’s and NCs, effective July 1, 2006:

Continuing Education Requirements for Renewal can be found at 64B8-45.001, F.A.C.

For licenses expiring May 31, 2007

If initially licensed from June 1, 2005 to May 31, 2006:

30 hours total, with specifics as follows:
3 hours on HIV/AIDS
2 hours on the prevention of medical errors
Up to 15 hours may be in home study
No more than 10 hours may be in management, risk management, personal growth, and educational techniques.
The licensee shall retain the certificates of attendance or other records for 4 years for documentation purposes, in
case of audit.

If initially licensed from June 1, 2006 to January 1, 2007:
3 hours on HIV/AIDS
2 hours on the prevention of medical errors

For licenses expiring May 31, 2009

If initially licensed from January 2, 2007 to May 31, 2008:

30 hours total, with specifics as follows:
3 hours on HIV/AIDS
2 hours on the prevention of medical errors
Up to 15 hours may be in home study
No more than 10 hours may be in management, risk management, personal growth, and educational techniques.
The licensee shall retain the certificates of attendance or other records for 4 years for documentation purposes, in case of audit.

Every Renewal Thereafter

30 hours total, with specifics as follows:
2 hours on the prevention of medical errors
Up to 15 hours may be in home study
No more than 10 hours may be in management, risk management, personal growth, and educational techniques.
The licensee shall retain the certificates of attendance or other records for 4 years for documentation purposes, in case of audit.

Medical Errors – Two continuing education hours for both initial licensure and renewal of license in the area of medical error prevention is required for initial license and renewal of license. This requirement is not in addition to the continuing education hours required for renewal, but a part of.
Every licensee must complete 30 hours of approved continuing education within the two-year licensure period which includes the following:
 

• Medical Errors: 2 hours for initial licensure and each renewal (Refer to Rule 64B8-42.005, F.A.C.)
   
• Up to 10 hours may be in management, risk management, personal growth, and educational techniques
   
• Up to 15 hours for approved home study courses
   

• Retain certificates of attendance or other records for 4 years

The Council shall award credit for educational experiences received through the following methods:

• Organized courses of post graduate study offered by or approved by the American Medical Association's Liaison Committee for Medical Education;
   
• Organized courses sponsored by the Public Health Service, state or territorial health services, or a branch of the United States Armed Services;
   
• College courses from an approved graduate or undergraduate program which is accredited by an accrediting agency approved by the United States Department of Education and which course clearly relates to maintaining skills necessary for the safe and competent practice of dietetics and nutrition services.
   
• Organized courses offered by or approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
   
• Courses approved by any Board within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance of the Florida Department of Health and which course clearly relates to maintaining skills necessary for the safe and competent practice of dietetics and nutrition services.
   
• In addition to the continuing education credits authorized above, any volunteer expert witness who is providing expert witness opinions for cases being reviewed pursuant to Chapter 468, Part X, shall receive 2.5 hours of credit per case for performing a literature survey of at least two articles in conjunction with the review of cases for the Board up to a total of 5 hours per biennium.
   
• A lecturer or author presenting or authoring for the initial presentation a Board approved continuing education program shall receive three hours continuing education credit for every one hour of program up to a maximum of fifteen hours of credit per biennium.
   
• One contact hour equals fifty minutes in duration.
   

• CE hours must be completed within the 24 month period prior to the expiration date of the license.

Individual Council CE Providers expired February 28, 2002. Individual providers are no longer approved directly through the Council (Refer to Rule 64B8-45, F.A.C).

Courses on the prevention of medical errors that are approved by any Board within MQA are accepted by the Council.
