Laws and Rules
Licensure Requirements with Applications -
Note: Some of the applications and materials are

Minimum
Qualification for licensure as a MASSAGE THERAPIST
-
Must be at least 18 years of age or has received a
high school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma (G.E.D.);
-
Completed a course of study at a Board
of Massage Therapy Approved School (pdf - 67kb) or completed a Board-approved
apprenticeship program;

Must pass the National Certification Examination;
and
-
Must have completed a 2-hour course on the
prevention of medical errors.

Must submit an application (pdf - 163kb) and fee for licensure as
a massage therapist. Some applicants may be required to appear
before the Board at a regularly scheduled meeting for determination
of licensure therefore it is imperative that all application
deadlines are adhered to.

Minimum
Qualifications for a MASSAGE ESTABLISHMENT license:
-
Must submit an application (pdf - 148kb) and fee for licensure as
a massage establishment.

Must submit proof of property damage and bodily
injury liability insurance coverage.

Must pass an inspection by the department, which
will be initiated by the Board office, upon completion of the
application.

How to Become a Board of Massage Therapy Approved School:
- Must submit an application (pdf - 169kb) to become Board approved, which includes:
- A copy of curriculum and catalogue or course description;
- A sample transcript and diploma reflective of the requirements
outlined in 64B&-32.003;
- A copy of faculty/instructor qualification, including a resume and
Form 7, if applicable;
- Proof that the school is licensed to teach massage therapy through
the Department of Education or other state-licensing agency if not
located in Florida.
- Note- All new schools must be approved by the Board at one of their
regularly scheduled quarterly meetings, which are typically held in
January, April, July, and October.

Minimum Qualifications for
Board Approved APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM:
- Prior to submitting an application (pdf - 175kb) and fee for apprenticeship, you
must:

Secure the sponsorship of a Florida licensed massage
therapist who has been licensed for at least 3 years;

Secure a licensed massage establishment at which you
will conduct your training. The establishment will have to undergo
an inspection by the department to ensure rule compliance prior to
commencing the training. Board office will initiate the inspection,
once the application has been deemed complete.

Additional Information:
-
The apprenticeship training program must be at least
12 months in duration but no more than 24 months in duration.
-
A sponsoring massage therapists may only supervise
one apprentice at a time.
-
Quarterly reports must be submitted by the sponsor,
which will document your training progress.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, you
will be required to pass the National Certification Examination
prior to licensure.

Minimum
Requirements for Certification in Colonic
Irrigation (Colonics):
In order to become
eligible for certification in Colonic Irrigation (Colonics) you must
either hold a valid Florida Massage Therapist license or have submitted
an application for licensure as a message therapist. (Please note that
the Colonics certification will not be issued unless a license to
practice massage has been approved.)

If currently licensed to practice Massage Therapy in
Florida, the following is required:

Successful completion of a course of study in
Colonics at a Board of Massage Therapy Approved Massage School,
which is approved to offer colonics, or completion of a Board approved apprenticeship program in the area of colonics;

Must pass the Colonics Examination administered by
the Department of Health.

Must submit an application (pdf - 49kb) and fee for certification
in colonics.

If not currently licensed to practice massage
therapy in Florida, the following is required:
-
Must be at least 18 years of age or have received a
high school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma (GED);
-
Completed a course of study at a Board of Massage Therapy Approved School (pdf - 135kb),
which has an approved course of study in colonics or completed a
Board approved apprenticeship program in the area of colonics;

Must pass the National Certification Examination and
the colonics examination administered by the Department of Health;
-
Must have completed a 2-hour course on the
prevention of medical errors. NOTE - If this was not a part of the
curriculum at the Board of Massage Therapy Approved School, it can
be obtained through a Board approved Continuing Education Provider (pdf - 260kb).

Must submit an application and fee for licensure as
a massage therapist and certification in Colonic Irrigation.
