The Board recognizes all specialty boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). In addition, the Board of Medicine recognizes three specialty boards outside of the specialty boards of ABMS: the American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM) – approved August 1999, the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (FPRS) – approved February 1997 and the American Association of Physician Specialists (AAPS) – approved February 2002.
