Professional Assistance - The Professional Resource Network (PRN) is available to provide assistance to those practitioners regulated by the Department of Health. The Program’s purpose is to ensure the public health and safety by assisting practitioners who may suffer from one or more of the following: Chemical Dependency; Psychiatric Illness; Psychosexual Illness - including Boundary Violations; Neurological/Cognitive Impairment; Physical Illness; HIV Infection/AIDS; and/or Behavioral Disorders. If you have reason to believe that someone regulated by one of the Boards under the Department of Health is impaired, be a friend, call PRN (your anonymity will be protected), or have them call PRN, to obtain help. Ignoring the problem supports their disease and not their recovery. The toll free number to call is (800) 888-8776.

National Provider Identifier
All health care providers who are covered entities under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) are required to obtain and use an NPI by May 23, 2007. The NPI will replace all existing provider identifiers used today to identify health care providers as health care providers in HIPAA standard transactions.

The purpose of the National Provider Identifier NPI is to uniquely identify a health care provider in standard transactions, such as health care claims. NPIs may also be used to identify health care providers on prescriptions, in internal files to link proprietary provider identification numbers and other information, in coordination of benefits between health plans, in patient medical record systems, in program integrity files, and in other ways. HIPAA requires that covered entities (i.e., health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers who transmit any health information in electronic form in connection with a transaction for which the Surgeon General has adopted a standard) use NPIs in standard transactions by the compliance dates. The compliance date for all covered entities except small health plans is May 23, 2007; the compliance date for small health plans is May 23, 2008. As of the compliance dates, the NPI will be the only health care provider identifier that can be used for identification purposes in standard transactions by covered entities.

The NPI must be used in lieu of legacy provider identifiers. Legacy provider identifiers include:
• Online Survey Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) system numbers;
• National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC) numbers;
• Provider Identification Numbers (PINs); and
• Unique Physician Identification Numbers (UPINs) used by Medicare.

They do not include taxpayer identifier numbers (TINs) such as:
• Employer Identification Numbers (EINs); or
• Social Security Numbers (SSNs).
